After writing an issue paper for my English class on the controversial subject: "Vaccinations and Autism," I really questioned how much I should trust my doctor. I had an issue when giving my children their MMR shots, my friend who is a nurse in the nursery told me not too and after much warning from my mom, I questioned my doctor on the safety. The only information that my doctor gave me is that it is absolutely safe and that there have been no links connecting the two. After writing my issue paper, I beg to differ and feel that my doctor should of informed me of the controversies going on about the subject. How often do we just accept the medical advise given to us by our doctors. This advice should not be taken lightly and may end up affecting you more than you would like. I started my issue paper off with a chilling story:
Hannah Polling received her vaccinations when she was 19 months old a few days after receiving her vaccinations she became ill, after recovery she displayed signs of autism, her parents reported after her vaccinations, "she just deteriorated and never came back" (nejm.org) What is unusual about Hannah's case is that for the first time federal authorities have agreed there is a connection between her autistic symptoms and the vaccinations she received. This was not the only law suit filed against the government for similar reasons; however it was one of the first that won. The government usually is in opposition, taking a strong stand that there is no scientific evidence that vaccinations cause autism. Many believe there is substantial evidence and statistics linking autism to the vaccination measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) which contains the neurotoxin thimerosal (Taking Sides: Clashing Views and Society Ninth Edition) This has affected us worldwide while "Thimerosal has been removed from or reduced to trace amounts in all vaccines routinely recommended for children 6 years of age and younger," (fda.gov) many parents are still concerned about vaccinating their children. There is a deeply controversial line drawn between whether or not vaccinations and autism are linked together, there is also the concern for how trustworthy not only our government but also our doctors.
Do we trust these officials just because there title? I don't think so always question and always trust your motherly instincts. There are many articles published and to read my full paper you can visit my E-Portfolio where have my full paper down loaded where you can read it the link is http://patiola.weebly.com/ under General Education/ English. In my paper there is a refrence with very good articles on the subject.
